Sky has announced that it will soon offer broadband speeds of up to 1,000 Mb to Irish households, thanks to its partnership with SIRO.
The need for speed is real among Irish households.
Over the last few months, we’ve seen providers such as Vodafone and Digiweb begin to offer lightning-fast speeds of up to 1,000 Mb in certain towns and cities around the country.
And now Sky has entered the fibre-to-the-home market and announced that it will soon offer similar market-leading speeds to customers.
When will Sky’s 1,000 Mb broadband be available?
Fibre-to-the-home broadband will be available from Sky sometime this summer.
There has been talk of a partnership between SIRO and Sky for quite some time, so here’s hoping that most of the behind-the-scenes work has been completed and that households will be able to sign up to the new products sooner rather than later.

Who will be able to get 1,000 Mb broadband from Sky?
It’s unclear exactly where Sky’s fibre-to-the-home broadband will be available, but the company’s Director of Products and Marketing, Ann-Marie MacKay, said that they want to “make Superfast broadband a reality for currently under-served communities”. This will be music to the ears of residents of Ireland's rural broadband blackspots, many of whom are still unable to get speeds of even 2 Mb.
MacKay also said that she expects Sky to offer its new broadband products to more than 1 million homes over the next three to five years.
Availability of fibre-to-the-home broadband is dependent on where SIRO’s network is currently present. You can take a look at SIRO’s coverage map to see if it’s likely to reach your home soon.
What is SIRO?
SIRO is a joint venture between Vodafone and the ESB, which is currently building a fibre-to-the-home broadband network across Ireland.
Fibre-to-the-home broadband is a type of connection that runs directly to a customer's home, thereby ensuring that speeds of 1,000 Mb are delivered reliably and consistently.
Fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband often suffers from its speeds being slowed down due to the fact that data must travel through old copper wires on part of its journey to a building.
Which broadband providers offer SIRO in Ireland?
SIRO’s 1,000 Mb fibre-to-the-home broadband is currently available from Vodafone, Digiweb and a number of regional providers around Ireland.
You can sign up to SIRO broadband with Vodafone or Digiweb on bonkers.ie now, so long as it’s available in your area.
