This is it, the final countdown is on! It’s just 6 days until the long awaited Season 7 of Game of Thrones hits our screens.
Once again, it’ll be that time of year to annoy those few left in our lives who aren’t following along with exclamations of “oh my god! You don’t know what you’re missing!” until they finally cave into the pressure and find themselves in a six series binge bid to catch up and stop the unbearable FOMO…
...Too dramatic?
Look, all I’m saying is, Game of Thrones is the poster child for premium, unmissable television and we all know it. The fact that it remains the most pirated show in history is proof!
And why is it so pirated? Simple. In the age of on-demand streaming, and with a show so full of shocking twists and turns as GoT, none of us is willing to wait and risk unwittingly reading spoilers on social media before we’ve had a chance to see the latest episode for ourselves.
So what’s the big deal? Just watch it on TV
Yes, it’s true that Sky Atlantic (which has exclusive rights to HBO content in the UK & Ireland) has heard and acted on the demands of its customers by airing new episodes of Game of Thrones just one day after their US release, largely cutting out the need to download new episodes from less legal means. They’ve even ramped it up this year with the network having announced that they will be simulcasting the season premiere - meaning zero risk of spoilers for any die-hard fans, providing you’re willing to watch at the ungodly hour of 2AM.
It’s not a problem of availability, it’s a problem of access
Sky Atlantic, as quality as it is, is a premium channel and consequently, comes at premium prices. If you wanted to sign up to Sky TV’s most basic TV only package now, which includes the channel, it would cost you €29.50 a month - and you’ll be tied into a contract for a minimum of 12 months. If you only want it to watch Game of Thrones, it’s no surprise many of us are flocking to torrent sites to get our GoT fix. What if there’s a cheaper way?
Watch Game of Thrones on a budget
If you’ve been out and about on public transport recently, there’s a good chance you might have come across some ads for Sky’s new contractless streaming service NOW TV. If you haven’t taken note thus far and you’re a GoT fan, now’s the time!
NOW TV offers a contractless way to access not only 10 live premium channels (including Sky Atlantic), but also over 250 on-demand boxsets (including the first six seasons of Game of Thrones) and all for only €15 a month. You can cancel at any time, which means as soon as the season ends, you can cancel the service if you so wish. Job done!
