Households can save hundreds on their electricity bills in just minutes with the latest offer from one of the country's biggest energy providers.

Despite recent falls, electricity prices in Ireland are still round 70% to 80% above where they were only a few years ago.

And with winter fast approaching, it means even higher electricity bills are on the way for most of us as the lights stay on longer, the tumble dryer gets used more, and we spend more time indoors.

But thankfully there are some great energy deals out there right now for new customers to help lessen the burden, including this latest electricity offer from Bord Gáis Energy.

So if you're looking to switch and save on your energy costs before the big winter bills arrive there's never been a better time!

Bord Gáis Energy electricity offer

Bord Gáis Energy is offering a whopping 32% discount on its electricity to new customers, which equates to a unit rate of just under 25 cent per kWh including VAT. And the annual standing charge, at just over €218, is currently the lowest among all suppliers.

At the moment households on standard rates will be paying around 35 or 36 cent for their electricity. So this means the average household could save almost €500 a year just by switching their electricity to this offer.

On top of this Bord Gáis is also offering €50 cashback to all new customers, which will be credited to either your first or second bill.

And as a Bord Gáis customer you can also sign up to its Rewards Club, which provides access to unmissable experiences, complimentary VIP upgrades and pre-sale tickets to the world-class Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin.

The contract is for one year and it’s a variable tariff. After the year is up, you’ll roll over onto a 5% discount. Or you can switch again to a new deal with a different supplier!

To get this new offer you must also pay by direct debit and agree to online billing but that’s pretty much standard these days.

You can sign up to this deal in minutes right now on bonkers.ie.

What happens if prices fall?

Thankfully it looks like the worst of the energy crisis is over. Though prices still remain very high by historical standards.

Since September 2023, Bord Gáis Energy, like most suppliers, has cut its prices twice. And in recent weeks, Electric Ireland cut its prices for a third time. So it's possible Bord Gáis will drop its prices once more over the coming weeks.

As this is a variable-rate offer, if Bord Gáis does reduce its prices then you’ll benefit from this reduction as well. Your 32% discount will continue and will be applied to the new, lower standard rate.

So you won’t miss out on any savings by switching!

Energy credits

In the recent Budget the Government announced that another €250 energy credit will be paid in two instalments to all electricity customers this winter to help households cope with continued high energy costs.

The first credit will be paid from 1st November while the second will be paid from 1st January 2025.

But you don't have to stay with the same supplier to get both credits. If you switch to another provider after receiving one of the credits (€125), the remaining credit you're due will be automatically applied to your bill by your new provider.

So you won't lose out on any credit by switching!

Bord Gáis Energy isn’t the only supplier offering great deals to new customers right now. For example Electric Ireland is offering a 28% discount on its electricity to new customers as well as €100 welcome credit.

You might also want to go with a fixed rate or you might want to bundle your electricity with gas and go with a dual fuel deal instead. Yuno Energy recently entered the gas market with a great dual fuel deal so this might suit you better.

Then to switch, all you need is your MPRN for electricity, your GPRN for gas, and a recent meter reading. You'll also need to supply some personal details and payment details for billing.
