Yuno Energy enters the Irish gas market

Irish households can look forward to more choice and hopefully lower energy prices.

With the clocks about to go back and the leaves starting to fall, it's a sure sign that autumn is in full swing and winter is on the way.

It also means the heating has probably been turned back on and higher energy bills are on the way too.

And with gas and electricity prices still close to double normal levels in Ireland, it'll be another pretty expensive winter to heat and light our homes.

But there is some good news for those worried about high energy costs. You can save big money on your heating bills by switching to a different supplier and availing of a new customer discount. And now there's even more choice for Irish households as Yuno Energy has entered the gas market offering among the cheapest rates available!

Who is Yuno Energy?

Yuno Energy is a subsidiary of Prepaypower, the pay-as-you-go electricity provider, which has been operating in Ireland for many years

However Yuno offers a billpay service at cheaper rates and operates as an entirely separate entity with its own app and call centre, which is open seven days a week.

Yuno launched in Ireland in 2023 and already has around 30,000 electricity customers.

You can find out more about the supplier here.

What’s on offer?

Yuno has now started offering gas to Irish households as part of a new fixed-price, dual fuel deal which it has just launched.

It’s offering gas at a unit rate of just under 8.3 cent per kWh, which is one of the lowest rates in the market right now. And electricity at a rate of just under 24 cent per kWh, which is the cheapest rate in the market.

Both these rates are fixed for one year and you can sign up to this deal in minutes right now on bonkers.ie.

We are delighted with the success we’ve enjoyed since launch a year ago and the recruitment of 30,000 electricity customers. This is the perfect time to extend our offering to gas customers and to offer them the same competitive prices and the unique level of control over their energy consumption which has been so popular with our customers over the past year.

Considerations

It's important to highlight that Yuno's duel fuel deal is a fixed-price tariff for one year.

Although it's extremely competitively priced, it does mean that if energy prices were to fall over the coming months, you wouldn't benefit from any reduction. So something to bear in mind. Of course it also means that if prices rise again, you won't be faced with a hike in your bills either.

Yuno is also only offering dual fuel deals for gas for now. In other words, you can’t just switch your gas to Yuno. You must get both your gas and electricity from the supplier, which may not suit everyone.

You must also agree to online billing, but that's fairly standard these days.

Here's a look at what else to consider when choosing a new energy supplier

Will this lead to lower prices?

More competition is always good for consumers.

Before this announcement, there were only six gas providers in the Irish market, compared to 11 electricity suppliers for example. So competition was lacking a bit. So this news is undoubtedly good for consumers.

However it's unlikely a full-blown price war is going to break out. And prices will remain high for the foreseeable future.

Wholesale gas prices are still around double normal levels. As our wholesale electricity prices. So there's a limit to how far energy prices for consumers can fall for the time being.

But if you're out of contract and haven't switched energy supplier in over a year, there's absolutely big money to be saved by switching to Yuno or one of the other energy suppliers.
